Europe is seeing a sharp increase in the market uptake of highly efficient buildings: according to the EU Buildings Directive, all new buildings must be "nearly zero energy buildings" by 2020 (public buildings already by 2018). A "nearly zero energy building" (NZEB) has a very high energy performance, the very low amount of required energy is covered to a very significant extent by renewable energy.
